Dataracks Launches Modular Approach for Datacentres
News

Save energy, save money, improve cooling with eMOD

eMOD is a new modular concept that will make it easier for Datacentres to gain immediate energy savings and comply with industry best practice.  It comprises a set of server racks incorporating cold aisle containment and airflow management.  Dataracks will launch eMOD at ‘5th Power and Cooling for Datacentres’ 7-8 October 2010.

eMOD is a ready for immediate use and manufactured in the UK.  The modules of server racks are fitted internally with blanking panels and airflow management features.  They are delivered and installed complete with latest energy-saving technologies including cold aisle containment, options include overhead cableways, lighting and security.  The same modules can incorporate hot aisle plenum return.

eMOD can be customised to suit any floor layout and the flexible concept allows planning of services such as power, cooling and cableways with the option of in-row or in-rack cooling. The cooling and power can then be controlled and managed for each module independently with its cooling airflow balanced to heat load. High or low-density server rack aisles can be created with power delivered to suit server load, offering even better control. Capacity is optimised without compromising the function and security.

A modular format allows the Datacentre manager flexibility as the modules can easily be extended or joined together and they can be created or retro fitted in an existing live Datacentre without downtime.

Jeremy Hartley, Managing Director of Dataracks and its sister company eCool Solutions explains.

“A big issue for managed hosting and Datacentre environments is a legacy of racks of different sizes and this is a very inefficient use of the space.  Our solution is to provide modules of racks with best practice airflow management and aisle containment incorporated.
“This allows the Datacentre manager to upgrade the Datacentre a section at a time to meet the recommendations of the EU Code of Conduct and Green Grid. Even installing a few aisles at a time will have a noticeable impact on energy consumption and is cost-effective.”

“We work closely with Datacentres to define and create our new products and solutions so that they address known issues and provide genuine solutions. We developed the self-closing doors after many reports of engineers leaving aisle-end doors open. It was essential that the door-closing mechanism used no energy, as we are determined to drive energy use down.”

“The new eMOD is a direct result of listening to our customers. Innovations created as a bespoke solution are tested in the Datacentre environment and then included within our range of products to the benefit of all Datacentre operators and owners.”

The racks included in eMOD are the Dataracks EcoRack, a server rack with best practice built-in. This includes a light colour finish to optimise light levels, innovative blanking panels and full airflow management fitted to ensure all cooled air does not by-pass the IT load. The eMOD and EcoRack typically enables a 20% energy saving when compared to traditional racks layouts.  For one client, UK Solutions, this concept facilitated an 8-fold increase in server density.

Dataracks' manufactures all its Datacentre solutions – aisle containment, airflow management, server racks and secure cages for ‘customer suites’ – in the UK.  This allows the company the flexibility to design solutions that are customised for the client and backed up by a full on-site installation service.
