New York, NY – May 24, 2010 – Democracy Now! has achieved LEED Platinum certification, making it the only radio, television and Internet production studio in the country to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest designation for Commercial Interiors. 

Brooklyn Interiors managed the construction project and assisted with green consulting. The company built a custom tracking system for all products used during construction to ensure they were local, Forest Stewardship Council-certified and made of recycled materials.  

Approximately 2,100 square feet of the new 9,000-square-foot studio—which is housed on the 11th floor of an old industrial printing house—is dedicated to technical space, including a broadcast studio with both television and radio components. Brooklyn Interiors used materials with low or no VOC and 100 percent wood from managed forests. It recycled more than 82 percent of all construction debris and re-used many elements of the original space.  

“We realized we could achieve a Platinum rating—rather than the initial goal of Silver—if we diligently kept track of every detail, like levels of recycled content and all purchase receipts,” says Dennis Darcy, principle of Brooklyn Interiors and LEED AP. “Educating the crew and the sub-contractors was key. Not only did we achieve Platinum certification, but we managed to do so within their budget.”
