New USGBC Board of Directors

U.S. Green Building Council Welcomes New Board Directors
Board responsible for articulating and upholding the vision, values, mission of organization

Washington, DC (Dec. 8, 2011) - The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced the newly elected officers and new directors to its 2012 Board of Directors. At elections that closed in November, USGBC's membership elected the following individuals to serve as directors:

  • Fiona Cousins, Arup, filling the Designer of Buildings seat
  • Marge Anderson, Energy Center of Wisconsin, filling the Environmental Nonprofit Advocate seat
  • George Bandy Jr., Interface, filling the Large-Scale Manufacturer seat
  • John Dalzell, City of Boston/Boston Redevelopment Authority, filling the Urban/Regional Planner seat

In addition, the Board named the following directors to fill appointed seats:

  • Joseph Sanches, School District of Palm Beach County, filling the Educator (K-12) seat
  • Stephen G. Bushnell, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, filling the Insurance seat
  • Gary Jay Saulson, The PNC Financial Services Group, filling the Finance seat

The Board elected Allan Skodowski, Transwestern as chair-elect and Lisa Shpritz, Bank of America, as Treasurer. Other 2012 officers continuing in their terms are Chair Elizabeth J. Heider, Skanska, and Punit Jain, Cannon Design, as secretary. Mark MacCracken, CALMAC Manufacturing Corppration, will serve as immediate past chair. Terms will begin on January 1, 2012.

The Board and the organization have made a remarkable impact on the sustainability of existing commercial buildings and we are poised for further success in 2012," said Chair-elect Skodowski. "By guiding buildings down the path to certification and ongoing greener operations while enhancing the customer experience, the USGBC helps building owners improve tenant satisfaction and do what's ultimately right for our environment, all while positively impacting the building owners' bottom line."

"USGBC has undergone tremendous organizational growth since I joined the Board in 2006," said Board Treasurer Shpritz. "I am very proud of how far we've come and even prouder to have the opportunity to continue my service as treasurer as we work to fulfill USGBC's mission to make green buildings available to all within a generation."

Additionally, Howard Frumkin, from the University of Washington School of Public Health, has been appointed by the Board to serve as its advisor on public health.

US Postal Gives Green the Stamp

  As Americans focus on autumn activities and to-do lists, the Postal Service’s Go Green Forever stamps remind everyone to consider using ride sharing and public transportation as easy ways to save fuel and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

 

 

“The Postal Service became a lot greener last year,” said Thomas Day, chief sustainability officer. “From fiscal years 2008 to 2010, we reduced our total greenhouse gas emissions by 8 percent, the equivalent of taking more than 204,000 passenger vehicles off the road for an entire year.”

New ASHRAE Research Program Grant Fosters Development of Innovative Technology

ATLANTA – A new research grant from ASHRAE will provide seed funding for novel research deemed to have the potential to significantly advance the state-of-the-art in HVAC&R.

The ASHRAE Innovative Research Grant is designed to encourage out-of-the box research to complement the research proposed and guided by the Society’s technical committees.  The award carries a base grant of $50,000 per year for two years, with an additional $25,000 available in the third year if matched by an industrial contributor.  Pre-proposals are due Sept. 1.

ASHRAE, DOE Further Working Relationship to Advance Energy Efficiency

ATLANTA – Building on a long-established working relationship, ASHRAE and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently signed an updated memorandum of understanding, committing to further improve efficient use of energy.

The agreement was signed at ASHRAE’s 2011 Annual Conference in Montreal. It represents an update of an agreement last signed in 2007.

ASHRAE Asks for Important Building Data Survey to be Prioritized on the House Floor

ATLANTA— ASHRAE received Congressional support from co-chairs of the High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus regarding the Society’s call to the federal government to resume work on the 2011 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS).

On July 13, Representatives Judy Biggert (R-Ill.) and Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) delivered a colloquy on the House floor in strong support of resuming work on the 2011 CBECS. Joining in the colloquy, the Chairman and Ranking Democrat of the House Energy and Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee, Representatives Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) and Peter Visclosky (D-Ind.), also lent their support to the importance of CBECS data.
Carnahan quoted a letter from ASHRAE issued in May, strongly urging Congress to allow work on the 2011 edition of the Survey to continue. The letter was submitted to the Congressional Record.

GE Bringing 45 Megawatts of Advanced Wind Turbine Technology to Estonia

Eighteen 2.5-100 Wind Turbines to Power Paldiski Wind Farm 45 Megawatts of Clean Energy to Increase Estonia’s Renewable Energy Capacity Complete Coverage to be Provided by GE Full Service Agreement

PALDISKI, ESTONIA—July 18, 2011—GE (NYSE: GE) wind turbine technology is making its debut in Estonia, one of Europe’s most promising wind sectors, by supplying 18 wind turbines for the Paldiski Wind Farm. Located in northwestern Estonia near the city of Paldiski on the Parki peninsula, the wind farm will be operated by Eesti Energia AS and Nelja Energia OÜ. Each operator is buying nine turbines from GE. In addition, the Paldiski wind farm will be supported by a 10-year full service agreement from GE to ensure successful operation.
