Building HouseSheri Koones’ new book is about the rise of prefabricated construction, and how to use this technique to build green. The book is gorgeous and laid out in a way that’s easy to flip through and digest at any time. The format is a showcase of different homes, twenty-five in all, that subscribe to being efficient and sustainable. Spread out over three sections, each highlighting buildings that range from being ‘green’ to establishing themselves as some of the ‘greenest’ homes in America.

What I love most about the way Ms. Koones presents each project is in the details. Not only will you be able to gaze upon each home in full color photographs, you will also get a detailed breakdown of the green measures that were taken in its construction. She then goes on to explain why these are necessary and the benefits derived from their use within sidebars, floor plans, and even a resource center! The subjects covered are a variety as well, including straw bale construction, structural insulated panels (SIPs), timber frame and much more

BookEach home is from a different section of the US, allowing for a comparison between region and climate and how these influence design decisions. The book recently underwent its second printing so it’s available again for purchase. If you have the book already let us know what you think in the forums. If you don’t and have any interest in different forms of prefab construction, or are looking for inspiration for your own project, this book will provide you with plenty of great ideas!
